How baseball appeared in Romania after the 1989 Revolution

The history of baseball in Romania begins in 1990, when, based on the long experience of playing baseball - considered our national sport - premises were created for the introduction of this sports game with a wide spread in the world.

An initiative group, made up of, among others, the former general secretary of the Romanian Sheep Federation, Cristian Costescu, and some of the instructors, referees and sheep players, fans of baseball, from Botoşani, Suceava, Neamţ, Bucharest, Călăraşi and Teleorman, carried out this action.

Thus, the date of February 4, 1990 consecrates the moment of establishment of the Romanian Baseball Federation. The Embassy of the United States of America in Bucharest gave the first material support to the new federation. Also with the support of the US embassy, the visit to Romania of the president of the International Baseball Federation took place, who, during April 26-28, 1990, attended the first demonstrations organized in Bucharest.

He engaged in the provision of materials and assured the leadership of the federation a documentary visit to the USA. The World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) has published the world ranking for baseball for 2022, and Romania is in position 54, with 90 points, ahead of Poland, Turkey, Bulgaria and Slovenia.
