In baseball, on the field of play, each team has a total of 9 players at any given time because a game of baseball is played in nine innings. These players are distributed in different positions with specific roles.
Pitcher (Pos. 1) It is the player who throws the ball to the batsman (Hitter) of the opposing team. The pitcher tries to get strikeouts or force players to hit the ball in a way that favors his team.
Catcher (Pos. 2) This player sits immediately behind the batter (Hitter) and has the role of catching the ball thrown by the pitcher and returning it to him. He is also responsible for stopping opposing runners from advancing by fielding the ball to the bases and coordinating the strategy of the defense.
The infield players
First Baseman (Pos. 3): The first base closer stands near first base. He must catch throws from the pitcher and make throws at first base. He is also responsible for covering first base to stop opposing runners from reaching safety.
Second Baseman (Pos. 4): The second baseman is responsible for second base and for covering it on defensive throws. He also has to pitch in on the outs and help block the lead off runners.
Third Baseman (Pos. 5): The third base closer stands near third base. His role is to catch the ball and throw outs at third base. He is also responsible for covering this base to stop runners.
Shortstop (Pos. 6): The shortstop occupies a center position between second base and third base. He has extensive defensive responsibilities and often needs to be quick and agile to catch balls and make clearances.
Outfield players
Outfielders: The team has three outfield players: a left fielder (Pos. 7), one of the center (Center Fielder) (Pos. 8) and one of Right Fielder (Pos. 9). These players are responsible for catching balls hit in the air and preventing them from going out of bounds. They must also throw the ball back into the field to stop runners from advancing.
